About Michael Kupperman and his Doings

Michael Kupperman lives and works in Brooklyn, where he has been voted ‘most improved’ three years running. His comics and illustrations have appeared in publications ranging from The New Yorker to Screw. His book of comics,Snake’N’Bacon’s Cartoon Cabaret, appeared in 2000 (good timing), and has recently been translated into French by La Cinquieme Couche (the title is the same). Also, an animated Snake’N’Bacon pilot with live-action segments was recently completed for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, and they’re “definitely” going to broadcast it sometime this year.

Currently Michael’s comics appear in Tales Designed to Thrizzle, published by Fantagraphics. Issue #5 (the Old People’s Issue!) will be out in April:

And in July,  Thrizzle Volume One: The Book will be out. It’s  in full color, hardcover, with a foreword by Robert Smigel.

  1. Holy heckfire! Thanks for the covers… can’t wait to see Issue 5! :B

  2. What issues are reprinted in the hardcover?

  3. Issues 1-4.

  4. Hey: I’m a big “Tales Designed to Thrizzle” fan. May I ask what computer system/software you use to make comics? Are they submitted to the publisher in the form of a disk?

    • I use photoshop on my Mac (everything having been hand-drawn and scanned, of course), and I deliver it to Fanta using their FTP site.
      Thanks Charles!

  5. Just discovered your site was up. Can’t wait for the new Tales to “drop.” Too bad we all have to order it through Fantagraphics dot com and they always invariably botch the order like amateurs and don’t seem to know how to market your genius. Oh well, small, small price to pay.

  6. Great site. Luv it and anything MKupperman.

  7. Dear Michael:
We are cousins. Your father Joel is my first cousin and we both grew up in Chicago. I am so delighted to see your work. My best to your family,
    Freddie Levin

  8. Ah, this is all gold. Been a fan since “Two-fisted Poe.” Though I didn’t realize you did other things besides “Two-fisted Poe.”

  9. Dear Michael,

I am not your cousin but I feel I could be if given the opportunity and some remedial training. Other than that, great work – wonderful site.

  10. I love these images! 🙂

  11. Dear Michael,

Have you ever read any books by Richard Brautigan? As I read/look through your comics I’m reminded by his writing. I imagine your comics are the type of comics he would have made had he made comics. I love your work and I’m going to Quimby’s in Chicago to pick up a copy of Tales Designed to Thrizzle, whichever they have.

    • I have, but years ago; I should read him again. Thanks for the kind words!

  12. hi Michael
I am your cousin and we have actually met. ( i think our parents have met too)
Me and my siblings are thrilled for your success. My nephews in particular have enjoyed your workk for years.

    • That’s amazing, thank you for telling me!

  13. I wanted to ask you something re permissions for one of your cartoons and describe my project. Can you e-mail me privately? Thank you.

  14. Tales Designed to Thrizzle is now sold out on Amazon, partly because I am using it as a stocking stuffer for virtually everyone I know. Pure genius. I recognized the intro page for one of the ‘old folks’ sections (man taking pulse of old woman as she chides him) from an old cigarette ad I had hanging on my wall for years. I used to love the irony and hated that damn woman. I also remember the ‘human sneeze’ and other references – did you have medical training??

  15. Dear Michael

We have an interview with actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz who will be playing Paul McCartney in a forthcoming film about the Beatles.

In the interview he talks about how he loves your cartoons.

Would it be possible to get an example of one of the covers of Thrizzle at a print resolution that we could publish alongside the article.

This is a very urgent request as we go to press this evening, so if you can send us something can you do it NOW please.

    Yours Joe Mee

  16. Do you have copy writer for so good articles? If so please give me contacts, because this really rocks! 🙂

  17. Any chances of a new snake’n’bacon episode?

    • It’s pretty unlikely…

  18. Great stuff! So I was browsing the A&S material, from 40th Street. There was also a JayBee Magazines…ever go there? Are you following my Vintage Sleaze Blog?

  19. Dear Michael,

I’m the author/director of the theater piece DOCTOR TEDROW’S LAST BREATH that you created that terrific illustration for in THE NEW YORKER a few years back. How would I go about getting a large copy of it to frame, signed by you?

    Matthew Earnest

  20. Hi Michael! Do you sell any of your original art?

  21. Michael Kupperman

What do you know about your ancestry?

We have a rather comprehensive family tree and it would be interesting to see if you fit in somewhere.

  22. Just did a new strip for the Comics Journal called “Apple Bit Newton” and it is an epic that ends w/ the 4th installment. I am fishing for quote blurbs that are vague, like “It sure is a comic” “I read it” “It is in color” or anything vague or in the tradition of Spy Magazine “I smell Oscar.”

  23. Would it be possible for me to email you privately? I need to pitch something that you won’t want to do and my tone may embarrass my employer.

  24. Hi, nice to meet you !

  25. Hi Michael,

I would really like to get you involved in a nobrow collaborative project. I don’t know if you have seen what we do, but I suppose our website is probably the best way of knowing http://www.nobrow.net.

Please do write back if you would like to and I can give you some more details.

    Best regards

    Alex Spiro

  26. thank you for snake’n’bacon.

    • My pleasure, Rayanna!

  27. Hello,

besides a big fan of your work, I am also an editor for the Greek comics related website Comicdom.gr. I want to ask you for a mini interview (9-10 questions), since many people in Greece enjoy your comics.

If you have the time, please send me an e-mail, so we can schedule it.

    P.S.: Can’t wait for Mark Twain’s Autobiography!

  28. Amazing work Michael. Love Scorcese on a bike!
Would like to speak to you privately regarding some licensing.
When you get a mo could you drop me an address?

  29. Hi Michael,

First of all – thanks for the laughs and letting me in to your wonderful universe of weirdness…

Second – wanted to ask your permission to use the Kickboxing Cakeboxer in a song I’m working on.
